A Mid-Year Message from the Principal

Viking Strong. Viking Proud. Viking Forward.

As we reach the midpoint of the school year, I want to pause and celebrate just how far we have come together as a Viking community. What is happening at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy is powerful, purposeful, and something we should all be proud of.

This year has truly been Our Year to Lead, Learn, and Level Up, and our Vikings are doing exactly that.

🛡️ Viking Victories Worth Celebrating

Our students, staff, and families have worked tirelessly, and the results speak volumes:

  • 2nd Place Winner – 2025 North Carolina School Boards Association Middle School Video Contest

  • 2025–2026 Roanoke Middle School Athletic Association Football Champions 🏆

  • Girls Volleyball Conference Runner-Up (2nd Place) in the RMSAA

  • Established an operating PTO, strengthening family and community engagement

  • Hosted our 1st Annual Fall Carnival, bringing Viking City together

  • Band Program growth from 16 to 63 students

    • Students are learning music theory, sight reading, and performance skills

  • Hosted 1st Annual “A Viking City Christmas” featuring band and student solo performances

  • 7 students selected for the NC State University NC-MSEN Pre-College Program

📚 Academic Growth & Instructional Excellence

  • Implemented a schoolwide station-rotation instructional model across core classrooms

  • Improved 2025–2026 NC Check-In A scores, reflecting academic progress

  • Created a new master schedule that expands student exploration and choice

  • Students are exploring interests in:

    • Coding

    • Graphic Design

    • Poetry & Drama

    • Music

    • Sports & Fitness

  • Remote Learning Success: High student attendance and engagement on remote learning days

  • Developed a clear, consistent Remote Learning Plan to ensure continuity of instruction

🌱 Positive School Culture & Student Support

  • Student disciplinary referrals have decreased, reflecting stronger relationships and expectations

  • Teachers report feeling safe, seen, supported, and valued

  • Students are excited about learning, opportunities, and celebrations

  • Our Peer Mediation Program is thriving and positively impacting student behavior

  • Student Council is active, giving students voice and leadership opportunities

♿ Exceptional Children’s Program Growth

  • All allotted staff positions are filled

  • EC services now operate with greater efficiency and effectiveness

  • Students receive both push-in and pull-out services as appropriate

  • Progress monitoring processes are firmly established

  • EC schedule maximizes instructional time and support

  • Weekly co-planning between EC and Regular Education (ELA & Math) teachers

🤝 Partnerships That Expand Possibilities

  • Partnership with North Carolina State STEM Center

  • Partnership with ECU College of Education – Center for STEM Education

  • Collaboration with the Poe Center Substance Use Prevention Grant Program

📣 Growing Our Viking Voice

  • Our social media presence has grown from under 500 followers to over 1,400, allowing us to better celebrate, communicate, and connect with our community

Looking Ahead

While we are proud of how far we’ve come, we are just getting started. The second half of the year will focus on deepening instruction, strengthening student voice, expanding opportunities, and continuing to build Viking City into a place where excellence is the expectation.

Thank you to our students, families, staff, partners, and community members for believing in Davie and investing in our vision. Together, we are proving what is possible when a school commits to purpose, partnership, and pride.
