A native of Littleton, North Carolina, Mr. Rainey is a true product of Halifax County Schools, having attended McIver Elementary School, William R. Davie Middle School, and Northwest Halifax High School. It was at Northwest Halifax where his passion for music and leadership took center stage as he served as Drum Major of the Ultimate Sound Machine Marching Band from 2013–2015—an experience that shaped his commitment to excellence and servant leadership through music.
Mr. Rainey continued his musical journey at North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned a music scholarship through Arts Education in Halifax County. While at A&T, he immersed himself in a rich musical environment, performing as a tubist in the Brass Choir, Symphonic Band, and the world-renowned Blue and Gold Marching Machine. In Spring 2018, he was initiated into the Alpha Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., further strengthening his dedication to achievement, leadership, and community service.
With over a decade of experience in music education, Mr. Rainey has taught in Guilford County, Nash County, and Halifax County Schools. His mission is clear: to show students and families that music is more than a class—it is a pathway. A pathway to confidence. A pathway to opportunity. A pathway to purpose. He believes wholeheartedly that an instrument can open doors just as wide—and sometimes wider—than students ever imagined.
As Director of Bands at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy, Mr. Rainey is committed to cultivating talent, character, and pride within the Viking City Band. He challenges students to aim high, work hard, and understand that excellence is never accidental—it is earned through dedication, discipline, and belief in what is possible.
Viking City Band is not just about music. It’s about building leaders—one note at a time.
