Meet Our STEM Teacher Ms. Sydnei Bullock
Originally from Warren County, North Carolina, Sydnei Bullock has always been interested in STEM, the arts, and understanding how and why things work. As a child, participating in NASA SEMAA and later assisting with its educational programs, along with attending Warren New
Tech High School, helped foster her interest in STEM and project-based learning. This curiosity eventually led her to the home of the bison, Howard University, as a Legacy Scholarship recipient, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, graduating cum laude. During her time at Howard, she developed a strong foundation in the sciences while gaining experience in both research and teaching environments.
While studying chemistry, Sydnei discovered how much she enjoyed helping others understand STEM and its connections across different fields. Her academic and research experiences included areas ranging from inorganic and organic chemistry to computational chemistry, with opportunities to present her work at national conferences, including the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChe). She also served as a teaching assistant for general and organic chemistry laboratories and gained additional teaching experience through summer programs, including 21st Century Learning (Project HOPE) in Littleton, North Carolina, and the Howard University Summer Health Professions Education Program (HU SHPEP), where she taught organic chemistry.
Outside of academics, Sydnei enjoys drawing, collecting trinkets, listening to music, marching band, window shopping, and spending time in nature. She is proud to represent her hometown and the Warren County Dynamic Marching Machine, where she spent six years in the drumline and served as drum major (Go Eagles!). She continues to carry that same sense of creativity, curiosity, and community into the classroom.
Taking Flight: Davie Students Learn to Fly Drones in STEM Class
At William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy, learning goes beyond the classroom—it takes flight.
In Mr. Kasese’s STEM class, students are engaging in hands-on, real-world learning experiences as they explore the exciting world of drone technology. What may look like students simply flying drones is actually a powerful opportunity to build critical skills that prepare them for the future.
STEM in Action
Through drone exploration, our Vikings are diving into key concepts in:
- Science – Understanding flight, motion, and aerodynamics
- Technology – Operating and programming drones
- Engineering – Problem-solving and design thinking
- Mathematics – Measuring distance, speed, and spatial awareness
Students are not just learning about these concepts—they are applying them in real time.
Building Skills That Matter
As students learn to fly drones, they are also developing essential life and career skills, including:
- Critical thinking and problem-solving
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Focus and precision
- Responsibility and decision-making
Each flight challenge pushes students to think, adjust, and improve—helping them build both confidence and competence.
Preparing for the Future
Drone technology is rapidly growing across industries such as aviation, engineering, agriculture, filmmaking, and public safety. By exposing students to these tools now, we are opening doors to future career pathways and expanding what they believe is possible.
