Davie 8th Graders Experience Hands-On STEM Learning at ECU's Brody School of Medicine and College of Education

Our 8th grade students recently traveled to East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine and College of Education for an immersive and inspiring STEM field trip experience.

During the visit, students participated in hands-on medical learning stations that brought science to life. They explored EKG heart monitoring, Doppler ultrasound technology, emergency response and “Stop the Bleed” training, and advanced auscultation using medical simulation equipment. These real-world applications allowed students to connect classroom learning to future healthcare and STEM careers.

In addition to engaging in interactive medical experiences, students toured ECU’s campus, learned about STEM majors and programs, explored the Honors College, and gained valuable information about college preparation and scholarship opportunities. The visit provided early exposure to higher education pathways and helped students begin envisioning their future beyond middle school.

This experience directly supports our STEM mission at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy by expanding learning beyond the classroom and providing authentic, career-connected opportunities for our students.

We are proud of our Vikings as they continue to Lead, Learn, and Level Up while preparing for bright futures ahead.

8th Grade Vikings Explore Science in Action at ECU’s Coastal Studies Institute

At William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy, we believe that the most powerful learning happens when students can connect classroom knowledge to real-world experiences. Our 8th Grade Vikings recently had the opportunity to do just that during an unforgettable visit to East Carolina University’s Coastal Studies Institute.

From the moment they arrived, students were immersed in an authentic STEM learning environment. They engaged in hands-on scientific investigations, explored coastal ecosystems, and learned how scientists study and protect our natural resources. Through interactive experiences, our scholars examined marine life, analyzed environmental conditions, and deepened their understanding of how ecosystems function and change over time.

One of the most impactful aspects of the trip was seeing students step into the role of scientists. They asked thoughtful questions, collaborated with peers, and applied critical thinking skills to real-world scenarios. Experiences like this not only reinforce academic standards but also inspire curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for science.

This visit also highlighted the importance of exposure and opportunity. For many of our students, this was a chance to experience a university setting and envision themselves in future STEM careers. It served as a reminder that learning extends far beyond the classroom and that our students are capable of achieving excellence in any environment.
